Chaplin did such universal comedy. In a way, it’s a shame silent comedy as practiced by Chaplin, Keaton and Loyd did not survive sound pictures (although Chaplin held on and made “City Lights” in the middle of sound’s first decade). The Circus isn’t his best, but it has its moments.
